The Samaria Gorge, located in the White Mountains of Crete, is one of Europe's longest canyons, stretching about 16 kilometers from the Omalos Plateau to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli. This breathtaking gorge is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, steep cliffs, and unique flora and fauna, including the rare Cretan wild goat. The hike through the gorge typically requires reasonable fitness and takes 4 to 7 hours to complete.

Situated on the flat-topped hill visible from the villa and signposted from the National Road, it was a significant city-state from Minoan times through the Hellenistic period.
